Best laptops for Fedora in 2026
Fedora’s whole pitch for laptops is the kernel. Fedora 42 tracks a 6.13 or newer kernel and rebases mid-release, so a laptop that is dead on Ubuntu 24.04 GA often just works here. That advantage is real, and it has limits.
What makes a laptop good for Fedora
Fedora is Wayland-first and GNOME-default. The questions that decide a machine:
- Kernel currency vs. webcam. A recent kernel fixes a lot, but the Intel IPU6/IPU7 camera still needs libcamera glue even on Fedora. Newer kernel, same camera headache, slightly less of it.
- Suspend on Wayland. s2idle drain is the recurring complaint. AMD Strix Point wants kernel 6.11+ for its deepest idle states.
- No proprietary blobs by default. NVIDIA means RPM Fusion. Plan for it or buy integrated graphics.
Recommended models
| Model | Kernel min on Fedora | Suspend | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 (AMD) | 6.8 | tweak | UVC webcam, EasyEffects for flat speakers |
| System76 Lemur Pro (lemp14) | ships ready | solid | Intel s2idle clean, 1.0 kg |
| ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 | 6.13 | ok | Phoronix-tested on F42, see CPU note |
| Framework 13 (Ryzen AI 300) | 6.12 | tweak | wants Fedora 41+, fingerprint finicky |
| Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen10 | 6.11 | tweak | all-AMD, Strix Point s2idle needs 6.11+ |
Our pick: the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 if you stay current. Phoronix tested it well on Fedora 42, and Fedora’s kernel is exactly what its IPU7 camera and Lunar Lake platform need. One firmware bug can stick the CPU at 400 MHz; the workaround is the performance ACPI profile until the BIOS fix. 982 grams, best keyboard here.
If you want zero surprises, the System76 Lemur Pro (lemp14) ships with System76 Open Firmware and Intel s2idle that just behaves. The hardware is plain, a 60 Hz FHD+ panel and a 15 W chip, so you are paying for the Linux support, not the spec sheet.
The all-AMD route, Framework 13 (Ryzen AI 300) or the Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen10, needs Fedora 41 or newer for Strix Point and kernel 6.11+ for the deepest idle states. Both are clean once you are on a current Fedora.
Skip these on Fedora
The MacBook Air M3 and M4. Fedora Asahi Remix is real and good on M1/M2, but M3 is still in development and M4 barely boots Alpine as of 2026. Touch ID never works under Asahi. Buying either of these for Fedora today means buying a machine you cannot daily-drive on it yet.
The Razer Blade 16 (2024) works on Fedora with the RPM Fusion NVIDIA driver and suspend tuning, but at a 4-hour battery and 2.45 kg it is a desktop replacement, not a Fedora laptop you carry. Specs there are also pending first-person verification, so treat the detail as provisional.
FAQ
Does Fedora’s newer kernel fix the Intel webcam? It helps but does not finish the job. The IPU6/IPU7 camera still needs libcamera plumbing, and the Dell XPS 9350’s case is a BIOS bug no kernel fixes.
Fedora Workstation or Fedora Asahi Remix for a MacBook? Asahi Remix, and only on M1 or M2. M3 and M4 are not daily-drivable as of 2026.
Will GNOME on Wayland drain my battery in suspend? The session is not the issue; s2idle firmware behaviour is. Expect per-board variance and 5 to 10 percent overnight on some AMD units.
